Intellectual Property Law
In Pakistan, Intellectual Property Law encompasses three main categories: Copyright Law, Trademark Law, and Patent Law. Broadly speaking, IP Law deals with the establishment and protection of intellectual creations such as inventions, designs, brands, artwork, and music.
The Intellectual Property Organization of Pakistan (IPO-Pakistan) was established as an autonomous body on April 8, 2005, under the administrative control of the Cabinet Division to provide integrated and efficient management of intellectual property in the country. On July 25, 2016, the administrative control of IPO-Pakistan was transferred from the Cabinet Division to the Commerce Division. The Trade Marks Registry, Copyright Office, and the Patent & Design Office were incorporated into the new organization under a unified management system. The major functions of the organization include:
Administering and coordinating all government systems for the protection and enhancement of Intellectual Property (IP);
Managing all IP offices in the country;
Raising awareness about IP rights;
Advising the federal government on IP policy;
Ensuring effective enforcement of IP rights through designated IPR Enforcement Agencies (Police, FIA, and Pakistan Customs).
